Silulo Foundation continues to walk alongside township entrepreneurs, not only by equipping them with digital and business skills but also by drilling deeper into specific industries where opportunities for growth are most tangible.
Recently, we hosted a Construction Industry Workshop in Dunoon, Cape Town, designed to further support past and present Silulo entrepreneurs working in construction. Entrepreneurs, past and present from the Silulo Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme, came together from across Cape Town’s townships to engage with industry experts and explore growth opportunities in a sector vital to South Africa’s development.
Unlocking Growth in Construction
One of the key sessions was led by Zama Mgwatyu from DAG, who unpacked “Understanding the Construction Industry & Positioning Companies for Growth.”
Zama reminded entrepreneurs that success is not about simply articulating challenges, but rather about driving solutions:
“It is not about better articulating the challenges but rather locking ourselves into a solution-driven process.”
Zama’s talk highlighted pressing issues impacting the sector, the importance of knowing the “rules of the game,” and how businesses can position themselves for long-term success.
Opportunities in Energy and Construction
We were also delighted to welcome Astron Energy (Pty) Ltd., who shared valuable insights into opportunities that exist where the energy and construction sectors intersect. For many entrepreneurs, this opened new perspectives on how to align their businesses with broader national infrastructure and energy needs.
Financial Tools for Entrepreneurs
Partners such as African Bank also contributed, equipping entrepreneurs with practical tools to manage and grow their businesses sustainably. Access to financial knowledge remains a cornerstone for building resilience and scalability, and our workshops ensure township entrepreneurs receive just that.
Tailored Industry Support
Silulo has long hosted bootcamps, networking events, and business development programmes that provide entrepreneurs with a strong foundation. However, we’ve realised the need to drill down into industry-specific support.
The Construction Workshop follows closely on the heels of a Beauty Industry Workshop, which gathered township beauty entrepreneurs to learn, collaborate, and access resources unique to their sector. By tailoring our approach, Silulo ensures that entrepreneurs are not only equipped with general business skills but also the specialised knowledge and networks to thrive in their chosen industries.
A Collaborative Future
This workshop once again highlighted the power of collaboration between corporates, funders, and township entrepreneurs. By bridging the gap between industry and enterprise, we help build stronger businesses that uplift communities, create jobs, and shape a more inclusive economy.
At Silulo Foundation, we believe in creating platforms for opportunity, knowledge-sharing, and growth. With each workshop—whether in construction, beauty, or other industries—we are reminded of the resilience and potential of township entrepreneurs.
