Reflecting on Silulo Foundation’s First Market Day in Khayelitsha
On 2 May, something powerful unfolded at the Isivana Centre in Khayelitsha.
Entrepreneurs, community members, partners, and supporters came together from across Khayelitsha and surrounding townships — not just to attend an event, but to participate in a shared vision: creating real access to markets for local entrepreneurs.
Because while training, mentorship, and skills development are critical, sustainable growth happens when entrepreneurs are given the opportunity to trade, connect, and be seen.
Silulo Foundation’s first Market Day was designed with exactly this in mind.
A Platform for Access, Visibility, and Growth
The Market Day brought together a diverse group of entrepreneurs showcasing proudly South African products — from designer clothing and beauty products to premium coffee and delicious food offerings.
With 21 exhibitors, the event reflected both depth and reach:
- 14 of the exhibitors were current and past Silulo Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme participants.
- The remaining 7 exhibitors included non-enrolled entrepreneurs, highlighting the growing demand for inclusive platforms like this.
Beyond the stalls, the day created something equally important:
- A space to test products in real market conditions
- Opportunities to generate sales and build brand awareness
- Direct engagement with Silulo Partners, stakeholders, protentional customers and the local community
- The beginnings of new collaborations between entrepreneurs
Several entrepreneurs reported meaningful sales and, more importantly, valuable connections that extend beyond the day itself.
A Collective Effort Driving Impact
The success of the day was strengthened by the presence and insights of key partners and speakers who continue to play a vital role in supporting entrepreneurship in the Western Cape.
We were honoured to hear from:
- Owona Madlingozi, representing the Astron Energy Development Fund
- Sibongile Somdaka, from Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) Western Cape
- Nazeer Seedat, from Vodacom Western Cape
Each speaker shared practical insights into their role within the entrepreneurial ecosystem, as well as the opportunities available to small businesses — reinforcing the importance of collaboration between the private sector, government, and development partners.
Community at the Centre
What stood out most was not just the activity — but the energy.
There was a strong sense of collaboration, pride, and shared purpose. Entrepreneurs supported one another, engaged with customers, and showed a willingness to learn, adapt, and grow.
Importantly, the event was also shaped by the community itself.
Several past programme participants paid it forward by contributing their time, energy, and expertise to the planning and execution of the event — demonstrating the Foundation’s ethos of building not just businesses, but leaders, collaborators, and active contributors within the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
A special shoutout to Noxolisa Ndyalivani from Woow Kids Trading and Woow Foods, Martina Kasirori from The Luxe Beautè Co, Kudzai Mugwanda from Kuhle Nails and Beauty, and Sizwe Nkopo, currently employed at the University of Cape Town. They are true ambassadors of the programme and of what the Foundation represents — a community that believes in uplifting others, creating opportunities, and building together, not only for ourselves, but for the communities we serve.
We look forward to formally recognising all contributors as we continue to document and grow this journey together.
More Than a Market — A Signal of What’s Needed
One thing became very clear:
There is a real need for platforms like this.
Entrepreneurs need access — not only to funding or training, but to:
- Markets
- Customers
- Visibility
- Networks
At the same time, communities are eager to engage, support, and buy local — when given the opportunity.
Market Day aims to bridge these realities by creating a platform where entrepreneurs can showcase, promote, and sell their products and services, while building valuable networks and connections. The initiative also creates opportunities for prospective funders, investors, and partners to engage directly with emerging businesses, while inspiring future entrepreneurs to enrol in the programme and become part of a growing entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Looking Ahead
This was not a once-off event.
It was the first of many.
Silulo Foundation remains committed to building structured, scalable opportunities that enable entrepreneurs to grow sustainable businesses, create jobs, and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the broader economy.
The entrepreneurs we saw are innovative, resilient, and ready — ready to scale, ready to employ, and ready to play a role in reshaping the township economy.
