Equipping Young People with Digital Skills for Work, Study and Entrepreneurship

In today’s economy, digital literacy is no longer a “nice to have”. It is a basic requirement for employability, further education and entrepreneurship. Yet, for many young people in township communities, access to practical digital training remains limited.

This is the gap the Silulo Foundation continues to address through its Digital Computer Literacy Course, proudly sponsored by the Astron Energy Development Fund.

Recently, the Foundation celebrated the graduation of its latest cohort of young people who successfully completed the six-month Digital Skills Programme in Dunoon. The graduation ceremony was hosted at the Missio Dei church in Bellville, where over 400 students received their certificates after completing the in-person, hands-on programme.

The bursary-funded course is designed for unemployed and job-seeking young people who need practical computer and digital skills to take the next step in their lives. For some, that next step may be finding employment. For others, it may be continuing their studies, growing in an existing role, or starting a small business or side hustle that could one day become a sustainable enterprise.

At the ceremony, Silulo founder Mr Luvuyo Rani reminded graduates that while a certificate is important, what matters most is what they choose to do with it.

His message was clear: opportunity must be matched with action. The certificate is not the end of the journey, but a tool that graduates can use to open doors, build confidence and create new possibilities for themselves. As he reminded them, success depends on how hungry they are to improve their lives and how willing they are to keep learning, applying themselves and taking responsibility for their own growth.

The Digital Skills Programme forms part of the Silulo Foundation’s broader commitment to addressing youth unemployment in South Africa. By equipping young people with relevant, practical and confidence-building digital skills, the Foundation helps bridge the gap between potential and opportunity.

For many participants, the programme is also about more than learning how to use a computer. It is about gaining the confidence to apply for jobs online, prepare professional documents, communicate more effectively, access information, manage basic business tasks and participate more fully in the digital economy.

This work is made possible through the support of partners such as the Astron Energy Development Fund, whose sponsorship enables unemployed and job-seeking youth to access the programme without the financial barrier that often prevents young people from pursuing skills development opportunities.

As South Africa continues to face high levels of youth unemployment, programmes like this play an important role in creating practical pathways into the economy. They do not promise overnight success, but they provide young people with something powerful: the tools, exposure and confidence to take the next step.

To the latest graduates, the Silulo Foundation extends its warm congratulations. Your certificate is proof of your commitment, but your future will be shaped by how boldly and consistently you use the skills you have gained.

The opportunity is now in your hands.
