Transformative Impact: How ‘Kefus place’ was rescued from the verge of being sold

Every entrepreneur faces challenges, and for us, the hurdles were becoming insurmountable, pushing us to the brink of selling our business. Little did we know that a lifeline was about to be thrown our way in the form of the Silulo Foundation. This is the story of how this foundation not only saved our business but transformed it into something beyond our wildest dreams.

A Journey from Teaching to Entrepreneurship:

“Before delving into the world of entrepreneurship, I was a school teacher. Juggling my business on weekends while maintaining a full-time teaching job was challenging. The passion to serve people, ensure their safety, and provide a space for community enjoyment propelled me to transition from a small, unlicensed shebeen in 1990 to a licensed shisanyama by 1994.”

The Turning Point:

It all began when Sizwe, a friend and fellow entrepreneur, mentioned the Silulo Foundation to Mam Kefu. Initially met with skepticism, it wasn’t until Mkhululi stepped in that we decided to give it a shot. The first day at the foundation [GH1] felt like a much-needed business counselling session, providing insights and perspectives that we had never considered.

Realizing We Were Not Alone:

Entrepreneurship can be a lonely journey. However, the foundation made us realize that we were not alone in our struggles. Connecting with other business owners who faced similar challenges created a supportive community that became an invaluable resource.

Learning and Growth:

The foundation became a learning hub for us. The knowledge and skills acquired through their programme and workshops equipped us with tools to navigate the complexities of running a business. The intent to go further with the foundation became a driving force.

Expanding Networks and Opportunities:

One of the most significant benefits came from the networks established through the foundation. Word of mouth led to new business opportunities, and we were able to assist and host events like Kuhle Nails’ end-of-year function. The foundation turned out to be a catalyst for business growth beyond our expectations.

The Business Journey:

Our business story began in 1990 as a shebeen with only six customers. Operating illegally until 1994, when we obtained a license, we transitioned from a shebeen to a shisanyama. The elegance of our traditional shisanyama attracted professionals, including early customers like Mr Mzoli. Over the years, we have evolved into a guesthouse with a bar and a spa, boasting 20-bed spaces, although currently running on 8-bed spaces.

Silulo Foundation: A Lifesaver:

Silulo Foundation entered our lives when the business was at its lowest. We started with Lion Lager – just two cases. Little did we know that this small beginning would mark the start of a transformative journey.

The Infrastructural Growth:

Today, we stand as a testament to the transformative power of Silulo Foundation. From the humble beginnings of an unlicensed shebeen, we have grown into a multifaceted establishment. Our guesthouse, bar, and spa are not just a physical representation of our growth; they symbolize the resilience and patience we’ve cultivated over 34 years.

Conclusion:

Our journey with Silulo Foundation has been nothing short of a miracle. From the edge of selling our business to becoming a thriving establishment, the foundation has played a pivotal role. We owe our success, growth, and newfound opportunities to the support, knowledge, and networks provided by the Silulo Foundation through its 10-month entrepreneurship programme. As we continue our entrepreneurial journey, we carry the lessons and experiences gained from the foundation and its entrepreneurship programme, forever grateful for the lifeline that saved our business.
