From Learning to Earning: Silulo Foundation’s Extra Mile for Youth
At Silulo Foundation, we believe that digital skills are only the starting point. True empowerment means preparing young people not just to navigate technology, but also to step confidently into the world of work, manage their money wisely, and develop the soft skills that employers and entrepreneurs value most.
That’s why, beyond our six-month Digital Computer Literacy (DCL) course, we partner with organisations that share our vision to offer additional learning opportunities – creating a bridge from learning to earning.
On 21 May 2025, all the currently enrolled 125 students from DCL Cohort 3 attended a PE&R Financial Literacy Workshop, supported by Absa and hosted at the Silulo Foundation Dunoon Centre.
What the workshop covered
The full-day session was designed to equip young adults with practical tools for financial independence, covering:
- Budgeting and saving techniques
- Growing one’s income
- Credit management and responsible borrowing
- Investment basics and long-term wealth creation
- Understanding everyday banking services
The initiative was facilitated by Roland Hein and the PE&R team, who brought both expertise and inspiration into the classroom. Students were particularly engaged during conversations about investment opportunities and making smart financial decisions early in life.
Certificates and recognition
In September 2025, all students who consistently attended and demonstrated commitment to the programme received Certificates of Participation. This recognition not only rewarded their discipline but also gave them an achievement to showcase as they step into future opportunities.
Roland left them with a quote that has already become a guiding mantra for many:
“Discipline is the bridge between financial dreams and reality. Start small, stay consistent, and your future self will thank you.” – Roland Hein, Trainer at PE&R
Why this matters
This initiative reflects Silulo Foundation’s commitment to adding real value for our students and the communities we operate in. By combining digital literacy with financial literacy and broader life skills, we are creating a holistic foundation for job readiness, entrepreneurship, and long-term success.
